Zine Exhibit in Los Angeles

Zines, or fanzines, are an alternative for artists to get their material out to the viewing public and typically considered as what was once an underground phenomenon. The emergence of blogs as a way to spark interest in a subject or topic of interest is further reinforced by the prior existence of zines. Despite the influence of the internet on building an audience or fan base for an artist, a zine's more that just a marketing tool per se, for both fan and composer.

Ooga Booga is opening an exhibition by zine publisher Nieves Library in Los Angeles. The exhibition opens on March 6th and runs from March 7th-April 3rd, featuring such artists as Mari Eastman and Ari Marcopoulos. Oscar Fashion 2008

Admittedly, I only saw There Will Be Blood out of all the Oscar-nominated films this year, but I have at least noted my picks for best and worst Oscar frock:

Marion Cotillard's dress by John Paul Gaultier with its white scalloping inspired recollections of mermaids for this French chanteuse that won the Oscar for Best Actress in La Vie En Rose.

I still haven't seen Juno yet (although I read the script, which I downloaded off of the Fox Searchlight website, and unfortunately didn't like that much). Not a fan of Diablo Cody's penchant for leopard prints in Dior, especially matched with pirate earrings. Arrrgh. Whatever, not that it matters what the Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay wears anyway, right?

If fashion designers had their way at the Oscars...

Print to Film

I just can't get into Alice Munro, even though Sarah Polley's film Away From Her was influenced by on one of her short stories. One of my favorite fiction writing publications is Zoetrope, Francis Ford Coppola's brainchild and better favored than his recent films. Here's a link to an excerpt of an essay by Polley in a past issue of Zoetrope on the repercussions of when she discovered Munro's "The Bear Came Over the Mountain":
